Beginners that are just starting out with fishing don’t know, but fishing line comes in a variety of types and choosing the wrong one can impact your success when you’re fishing. A lot of them don’t catch fish either because they use the wrong type of fishing line or because they use something that is too thick and visible for the type of fish they’re going after. You will find fishing line of four different types. They are braided, fluorocarbon, monofilament and fused fishing lines.
The monofilament line is probably the most popular, thanks to the fact that it can be used in all kinds of conditions. You will find different colors for it, including clear, green, brown and so on. The advantage of this type of fishing line is that is elastic and not very easy to see, working great in freshwater. The disadvantage is that it takes the shape in which it stays when it’s stored and that you need to replace it once in a while.
The braided line is considered the strongest type of fishing line, it’s great when you’re fishing with long lines and it can be used to catch big fish. The advantage of this line is the increased resistance to abrasion, the fact that it’s more durable and that it doesn’t break as easily when you make knots with it. There are downsides as well, especially its inelasticity and its potential of damaging the equipment on which it’s used or your hands. The braided line is also better in water that is not very clear and it can be a disadvantage in clear water.
The fishing line that is fused is similar to the braided fishing line but it’s manufactured in a different way. Even though the line is thin, it’s quite strong and durable, even when it’s exposed to sunlight. As far as the resistance to abrasion is concerned, the fused line sits between the braided and the monofilament line. The con is that you might get yourself injured while using this type of line, the fact that you can cut it with a scissor or knife only and that it’s quite visible to the fish.
The last type of fishing line we’re going to talk about is the fluorocarbon, which is usually a good choice for saltwater, but it has its uses in freshwater as well. A big advantage of the fluorocarbon is that it can’t be seen by the fish in the water and it has a good resistance when it comes to sunlight. Thanks to its resistance to abrasion, this fishing line is a good choice when you’re fishing in places with underwater obstacles and rocks. It also has the advantage that thanks to its weight, the line and the bait will reach the bottom of the water faster. The disadvantage of the fluorocarbon is that it’s a bit stiff and hard to cast out, not as strong and the fishing knots don’t hold that well.
Now that you know what types of fishing lines are available, you know which ones are most appropriate for the fish you’re going after.
